Cost of dementia

Joe Cardona’s Sept. 19 column, Dad’s ‘episode’ leads to many others, dealing with the difficulties in caring for his father’s dementia illuminates a catastrophe that, like rising sea levels, but more rapidly, is engulfing all but the 1 percenters.

The sudden leap in life expectancy brings for Baby Boomers, the brain deterioration diseases of their parents and the burdens of time, money and emotion.

The Republican Party will ignore this catastrophe probably until one of their leaders, who happens not to be a 1 percenter, is confronted by this crisis.

It will, no doubt, be expensive to find a remedy as it will be for rising sea levels, but the canaries in the coal mine — such as Cardona — are singing.
