Voice for little ones

The Sept. 13 article Akerman gives $1 million to help youth in foster care, highlights Akerman LLP’s continued commitment to one of our most vulnerable populations.

As director of the Miami-Dade Guardian ad Litem program, I have seen first hand their dedication to assisting foster children, not only through monetary donations, but also by stepping up and volunteering to represent the best interest of these children in court as Guardians ad Litem.

With more than 3,500 children in the Miami-Dade dependency-court system because of allegations of abuse, abandonment and neglect against their caretakers, the assistance of community members is critical to ensuring safe outcomes.

The local Guardian ad Litem program currently is only equipped to represent 70 percent of these children. With the help of Akerman, we hope to get closer to giving all of these kids a voice.
