Leave Arthur Godfrey’s name on road
Abraham Lincoln, our greatest president, had views in his time that would not — and should not — be acceptable today. So, too, did Washington, Jefferson and both Roosevelts.
Arthur Godfrey has been gone 31 years now. Back in 1956, when I was 14, our family moved from the snowbelt of upstate New York to Florida. A key selling point for us was my parents’ love for Arthur Godfrey's TV show, based in Miami Beach for the winter. He “sold” Miami Beach and Florida to millions.
To take his name off a Miami Beach street, as some propose, seems revisionist to a foolish extent.
Makes me wonder if there is a forthcoming plan to change the name of Lincoln Road.
