The Sept. 11 edition included an article, Florida prisons appear to improve, but holes remain. However, a Sept. 13 article, Broomstick attacks: a prison ritual, describes one of the most heinous attacks inside an institution for young criminals that I have read in a long time.
A 19-year-old inmate is viciously raped with a broom by other young inmates, and this appears to be part of a ritual happening regularly in Florida’s facilities. No explanation why a broom was so handy for these criminals, no video to record the attack and guards were absent.
I have to wonder: Have our local politicians, who spend so much time complaining about human rights in other countries, bothered to look at the lack of human rights right here in Florida?
