Help for the homeless

At last week’s Miami commission budget hearing, Marleine Bastien, executive director of Haitian Women of Miami, said that more needed to be done to help “a new breed of homelessness in Miami-Dade County where you have mother, father and the children.”

Family Promise of Miami-Dade County offers a collaborative, faith-based partial solution to this problem of homeless families.

Combining the resources of 13 local congregations, our nonprofit provides a cost-effective, time-tested approach with a track record of success.

By Miami Herald’s own count, there were 5,552 individuals in homeless shelters at the start of the school year including 1,200 family members housed in hotel/motel accommodations. In addition, the school system counts 2,900 homeless children in its population.

Can we agree this is unacceptable?

Larry Silvester, president, Family Promise, Miami
