The Surfside Town Commission wants voters to change the entire town election system to provide for longer and staggered terms of office. Commissioners want to substantially reduce the level of accountability that town officials have to the people of the community and give themselves long-term immunity from being held responsible for their decisions. Their intent is to create a system that makes it impossible to change out a majority of the commission at any time.
Clearly, these proposed changes are designed to protect elected officials and extend their tenure even when their policies and decisions outrage the people they are elected to represent. The changes would perpetuate the status quo of a government that seeks to serve special interests rather than the public interest.
I will be voting No against these ill-conceived ballot questions.
