Florida bicycle deaths

Last week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study of the incidence of bicycle deaths by state.

I’m one of many bicyclists in Florida and I found it amazing that Florida has the highest bicycle death rate in the country with no state coming even close to our death rate. Florida’s Average Annual Age-Adjusted Cyclist Mortality from 2008 to 2012 is 0.57. The next closest states were Delaware at .38 and Louisiana at .33.

I urge everyone, whether they ride a bicycle or not, to write legislators in Tallahassee to request that the state investigate this terrible situation to determine the causes and help reduce the needless slaughter on the roads of Florida.
