Courageous duo stood and protected NMB

In 1956, John F. Kennedy penned a book of short biographies describing acts of bravery and integrity by elected officials who defied the opinions of their constituents and suffered severe criticism and losses in popularity as a result. “Profiles in Courage” is widely considered an American classic because it eloquently describes the dilemma of conscious in public affairs.

To stand alone on principle in political affairs, regardless of public perception or fear of voter rejection, is a true test of courage. When people take an oath of office, it’s a solemn promise to do what is required.

Last year, questions arose about the legal residency of North Miami Beach Mayor Anthony DeFillipo. City Commissioner Michael Joseph and former City Attorney Hans Ottinot protected the city’s charter. Ottinot retained outside counsel, which concluded the mayor had “automatically vacated” his seat by not legally residing in the city. Counsel further concluded that DeFillipo “could face charges or a conviction, and ultimately be removed from office by the governor.”

Joseph spent months protesting the mayor, who presided over commission meetings. As an act of peaceful civil disobedience, and advice of counsel, Joseph remained absent. Last month, the commission voted to remove Joseph and forced Ottinot to resign.

DeFillipo was eventually arrested on three counts of an unqualified elector willfully voting. On June 5, Gov. DeSantis signed an executive order suspending him.

Joseph and Ottinot’s political setbacks were unjust, but sometimes, as a quote attributed to George Washington says: “It is far better to be alone, than to be in bad company.”
