Drawing new districts
I attended the Senate public hearing in 2011 at Miami Dade College on redistricting to which Fabiola Santiago refers in her July 11 column, Returning to the rule of law.
That group, with a few exceptions, couldn’t have cared less about what the speakers were saying regarding the redistricting amendments.
The Republicans knew that they would do whatever they wanted to do behind closed doors and the residents of this very flawed state of Florida wouldn’t know the difference or care.
Thanks to the League of Women Voters, Fair Districts Florida and other democracy-protecting groups we have gotten to where we are now.
I wouldn’t put it past these lawmakers to try some other angle to fool the people. If they do, I hope they don’t succeed. I am so happy that they have a tight deadline so that we can have fair districts drawn for next year’s elections.
