Reopening embassies

Another historic day in the United States and Cuba relations was marked with announcement on the re-opening of embassies. The negotiations that followed the Dec. 17 announcement and the subsequent positioning by the Cuban government have demonstrated that they are not willing to open their system.

Our administration is hoping for spontaneous combustion of the Cuban people demanding change. This will only bring about the risk of harsh retaliation by the regime and an uncertain future to the island, while at the same time many are lining up to profit from the opportunities that may be available at some point to those that are willing to do business with the government of Cuba and their system.
