Confederates protected slavery

Kathleen Parker said in her June 24 Other Views column, Confederate flag should be removed, that the war for many Southerners “was about protecting their homes and families from invaders who came to conquer and burn.”

Is she saying that these Southerners did not know that the war was about protecting the rights of slave owners to keep their slaves? The fact that they may not have owned plantations is irrelevant. They were protecting and fighting for those who did. They do not deserve adulation.
