Letter to the editor: Miami Boat Show supports jobs, protects the environment

As we prepare to welcome attendees from around the world for the 79th Miami International Boat Show Feb. 13-17, we are proud of the legacy we have built as Florida’s premier boating event. Every year, we generate $854 million in statewide economic impact — that’s equal to nearly two Super Bowls!

The show fills 100,000 hotel rooms and brings $53 million in local spending from out-of-town visitors and exhibitors. More than 30 percent of exhibitors are South Florida-based companies that make a significant amount of their annual revenue at the event and support 3,597 full-time jobs.

The show is also committed to being responsible stewards of the local environment and leaving the Marine Stadium Basin cleaner than we found it. Since our first year on Virginia Key, we have collected hundreds of yards of pre-existing trash. Our careful installation of the temporary docks has also helped double the amount of sea grass in the Basin.

We showcase thousands of marine-industry innovations. We also educate boating enthusiasts on the efforts of more than a dozen conservation organizations that will be exhibiting and participating in panel discussions at Costa Conservation Village’s new Volvo Penta Stage. Furthermore, Costa’s Kick Plastic program offers filtered water stations throughout the show to help eliminate thousands of single-use plastic bottles.

Boating is not only an economic driver but also a vehicle for meaningful experiences consumers are seeking. We thank the community for supporting us through our decades-long history here and welcome all residents to join us at our home in Miami Marine Stadium and Park on President’s Day weekend.
