Costly treatment

The April 16 editorial, Help for mentally ill Floridians, said that “In county jails, some 1,400 inmates take psychiatric drugs, at a cost to taxpayers of $80 million a year.”

Did anyone do the math and realize that it comes out to $57,142.86 per inmate? And in your opinion, “the state needs to do more, much more?” How much more do you think the state should do?

What kind of assistance is being provided to those similarly mentally ill, but who aren’t inmates in county jails.
