Missing Jose Fernandez

Having the All-Star Game here in Miami was nothing short of awesome. Yet at the same time, so many of us felt sad for what might have been.

It was to have been Jose Fernandez’s time in the spotlight — here in his home ballpark. In his stead stood a much more stoic Matt Scherzer. After pitching a scoreless first, he calmly strolled to the dugout.

It was then that I thought about Jose and the joie de vivre that was his very essence — those special qualities that set him apart from other All Stars — his passion for the game of baseball, his boy-like charm, and his impish, ear-to-ear grin.

Amid all the hoopla of All-Star Week, we thought of Jose. He was missed.
