The Miami Herald panders
VShame on the Miami Herald’s Editorial Board for pandering to the Cuban old guard with its June 16 editorial, “Time to make Cuba pay for its rigidity.” It appears the Herald has no difficulty with U.S. diplomatic relations between, say, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, both arguably with far more repressive regimes than Cuba’s.
The Herald ignores opinion polls on both sides of the Florida Straits overwhelmingly supporting relaxed sanctions. It ignores, too, the immediate and increasing economic benefits to both countries.
The Herald dismisses the United States’ improved standing in the region resulting from improved relations with Cuba, as well as recently initiated environmental cooperation.
It’s breathtaking how such blatant pandering can undermine a newspaper’s editorial credibility.
