South Miami High

I was astounded at the assertion in John Pistorino’s May 24 letter, “School choice,” that the public schools are a failure. Clearly this gentleman knows nothing about South Miami Senior High.

Since opening in 1971, this school has educated three generations of students. Yes, South Miami alums make sure that their own children attend the school of their parents. The school has excellent magnet programs in robotics, the fine arts, and music. Sen. Marco Rubio is a graduate of South Miami.

My point? South Miami Senior is exceptional, but not an exception. Most public schools are as successful as South Miami. It’s time for us to celebrate the successes of the Miami-Dade Public Schools, and to encourage our legislators to fairly fund them.

John Branstetter,

Miami
