I’ve read with alarm reports that climate change is already affecting South Florida.
While there are noteworthy efforts to address this at the local level, we face shameful inaction in Tallahassee and in Congress. I hope that Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Diaz-Balart and Carlos Curbelo will find the courage to lead where other leaders have failed.
Wouldn’t it be nice if South Florida, for once, was in the headlines for an act of strong leadership on climate change? It is time to stop treating this as a partisan issue and, instead, confront the moral challenge that climate change presents.
South Florida has a long history as a place of refuge, sheltering those who seek safety from persecution and natural disaster. Don’t we owe it to ourselves to protect this land and water for all of the people, plants and animals that find sanctuary here?
