No to Yoest

On April 28, President Trump appointed Charmaine Yoest to serve as assistant secretary of public affairs for the Department of Health and Human Services.

She has made several outlandish claims about reproductive rights. She opposes birth control and does not believe that increased access to birth-control methods reduces the need for abortion, even though numerous studies and common sense tell us that it does. Yoest has said that the Intrauterine Device (IUD) has “life-ending properties.”

Most disturbing of all, Yoest has said that abortion can cause breast cancer.

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists cited in a 2015 reaffirmed study that, “More rigorous recent studies demonstrate no causal relationship between induced abortion and a subsequent increase in breast cancer risk.”

These egregious statements, from someone who has no medical degree, are a serious and dangerous affront to every woman in this country.

This appointment isn’t about ideology.

This is Trump wishing harm and punishing women, just as he said he would during the campaign.

Yoest has no business being anywhere near a position that has the words “health” or “human” as part of the job description.
