There is legislation in Washington, D.C., to re-establish the U.S. Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). It is sponsored by U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Toledo, Ohio.
The CCC, a New Deal initiative, gave us forests and parks across America. Those who enrolled followed President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s vision that, “We cannot always build a future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”
Federal agencies involved worked together in uncommon cooperation that made this all-public sector program the most popular in U.S. history.
Investment in the 21st-century CCC will absolutely give direction to young men and women living lives of quiet desperation, many homeless veterans and other Americans’ in need. They would save our democracy and environment as they perform duties from reforestation to disaster relief.
I urge Floridians to follow Will Rogers’s advice: “Remember, write to your congressman. Even if he can’t read, write him.”
