Re the Feb. 24 Other Views article Biased teachers can discourage girls from studying math and science: At Doral Academy Charter, girls rock in math. The Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society has 10 officers; eight, including the president, are girls. The math club is large, made up of more than 100 students who travel throughout the state competing in math competitions. They placed 10th out of 55 schools at national convention last summer and are going to Salt Lake City this summer.
Several of their math coaches are women. Elizabeth Manning, who has taught and coached there for three years, won a national award at last year’s convention.
More recognition should be given to girls’ success in academics to encourage others.
