I am writing to advocate for a 700-seat theater in addition to 300-seat theater in the rebuild of the Coconut Grove Playhouse.
My wife and I were season subscribers since before José Ferrer was artistic director. Only someone with limited theater background and even less economic background could envision only a 300-seat theater.
It would be an underuse of the land and the brand. Seven hundred extra people coming into the Grove represents at least $6 million $10 million a year in additional revenue for the Grove. The end product with two theaters will be more than the sum of its parts.
Joe Adler will continue to produce his excellent plays and with the opportunity to present shows in the larger venue, it would add another dimension to the Playhouse.
