I’m an emergency-room doctor from Chicago. My son and I saw an unprovoked pit-bull attack of a 4-year-old girl on the 18th Street beach. The dog tore her ear in half, cut her neck and nearly drowned her.
Many people tried to notify the police, including four officers in various cruisers, Jeeps and ATVs, one of whom remarked that he was off duty in 20 minutes. Pit bulls are illegal in Miami-Dade County, and dogs are not allowed on the beach. The owner had two that he let off leash. The child will need plastic surgery.
The family was terrorized, and the officers were casual, late and unprofessional. Not a good way to begin a robust tourist season in the face of public scrutiny of law enforcement.
