Pedestrians err, too

Re the Feb. 16 story Elderly pedestrians especially at risk on South Florida roads: There are always two sides to any story.

I live in Fort Lauderdale and we have the same problem with pedestrians, on East Las Olas Boulevard, for example. As I drive along there, pedestrians refuse to use the crosswalks. They also cross when the pedestrian sign is flashing "Don’t cross."

A few days ago, I pointed this out to a man crossing illegally. He said “Thank you” and proceeded to cross against the light.

All the redesigning of streets in the world is not going to stop jaywalking. As Ramon Sierra, from the Florida Department of Transportation said: “It’s people not paying attention, not looking around.”

Bob Hoysgaard,

Fort Lauderdale
