From tariffs to inflation, a lot of signs point to economic uncertainty. In South Florida, the cost of living is rising while consumer confidence has only partially rebounded in the last month.
As a result, people are looking for ways to protect their bank account in the event of a recession. They’re calling it: Recession proofing.
Recession proofing are small steps people are taking to save money. On social media, users are sharing their recession proofing hacks, such as not buying planners or notebooks, going thrift shopping, growing their own herbs and vegetables and skipping Doordash or not taking Ubers.
There has been a noticeable shift on the purchase of beauty products. Trends such as “recession blonde,” where women are letting their salon highlights grow out, are becoming popular on social media platforms. Searches for at-home beauty solutions — press on nails and DIY facials — have risen in recent months.
While these small changes to spending habits may seem superficial, it reflects a shift in mindset: control what you can, spend on what matters. The Miami Herald Editorial Board wants to hear about the ways you are recession proofing your life.
