Fight for life ends for Miami-Dade detective who ran toward danger | Editorial
Miami-Dade Det. Cesar Echaverry’s final act of bravery on the job Monday was running toward danger and a hail of bullets to arrest a suspected armed robber. He was shot in the head.
Sadly, after a two-day fight for his life, Echaverry died Wednesday night. The people who loved him — his parents, fiance, siblings and fellow police officers — are left to pick up the pieces. And a community is left to confront the everyday gun violence that has taken too many lives, including those who have willingly sworn to protect it.
And, investigators with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are left to piece together the tentacles sparked by an armed robbery at a convenience store in Dania Beach that led to the officer’s death. They have a big job; there are two police shooting scenes to investigate.
The suspect chased by Echaverry and other officers with the Robbery Intervention Detail unit was killed on the scene.
A day later, a second armed suspect was confronted by police at an Extended Stay America Suites Hotel in Miami Springs, where he was staying with his children and girlfriend. The second suspect was also killed. Police found an AK-47 in the room. The woman and children were not injured.
Now, among the questions unanswered: How many shots did both suspects fire at officers? How many shots were fired by officers who arrived at the initial Miami scene with Echaverry? Did Echaverry fire his service weapon before being shot?
But those are just details that will not change the tragedy that the promising life of a courageous 29-year-old detective was snuffed out because of unending gun violence in America, where suspects routinely outgun police officers.
A visibly upset Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo Ramirez had the task of announcing the death of the five-year veteran:
“Officer Echaverry died in the line of duty while serving and protecting our community. Our law enforcement family will continue to stand beside and support the Echaverry family through this difficult time. We’ll never forget officer Echaverry’s bravery and sacrifice.”
Well said, Director.
We salute Echaverry and his colleagues for putting their lives on the line to protect the rest of us.
