FIU and Miss Universe

Re the Jan. 18 article FIU’s bet on Miss Universe comes with a price: As a faculty member at Florida International University for 40 years, I am offended by the criticism of a university with a history of forward-thinking that places Miami in positive global spotlight.

FIU has signature events, alumni, programs and campuses around the world.

It seems fitting they would host 88 ambassadors of foreign countries in an established 63-year-old international event and capitalize on the future benefits of such television coverage.

Our faculty will never be in agreement over business or academic decisions by the university. However, most will agree that Donald Trump can afford to and should cover the cost of all the immediate accommodations for his event.
