Fewer DUI arrests

The Feb. 1 article, DUI arrests plummet in Miami Beach, and across the county, implied insufficient police action in Miami Beach rather than celebrating success. As stated in the article, crashes involving drunk driving in 2015 were down by more than 50 percent yet somehow the implication is that police should be making more stops.

I live in Miami Beach, my friends visit us often arriving by Uber or Lyft, which we then take to a restaurant or whatever. A few years ago, they’d be stopped on the way home by DUI checkpoints on the MacArthur or Venetian Causeways. It worked, now people use their app to get a ride. Simple.

Meanwhile, in suburban Pinecrest, which has no tourists, DUI arrests are up. I wonder if that's a reflection of no evening traffic, less Ubering, and a police force that has plenty of time on their hands? We should be celebrating the drop in DUI arrests, not criticizing our police forces.
