Hurricane Imelda approaches Bermuda, expected to hit as Cat 2
Category 1 Hurricane Imelda strengthened overnight and is on the cusp of Category 2 strength as it approaches Bermuda, which remains under a hurricane warning.
The storm also picked up the pace overnight — now moving at 21 mph versus the 7 mph crawl it had near the Florida coast.
Imelda is expected to be a quick, hard punch to the hurricane-prone island. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center warned it will bring hurricane-force winds, destructive waves and flash flooding to the island starting Wednesday night.
From there, Imelda is expected to keep moving east, where its path may or may not be affected by the wake of once-powerful Hurricane Humberto.
By Saturday, the forecast calls for Imelda to be back down to a tropical storm.
Humberto, still a Category 1 hurricane, is expected to dissolve in cooler northern waters as soon as Wednesday evening.
Both storms are broad enough that their far off swells will make surf rougher and more dangerous along the eastern seaboard for at least a few more days.
“Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda are producing a large area of hazardous marine conditions over the western and central Atlantic, where life-threatening rip currents are expected to continue affecting beaches throughout the region through the week,” the hurricane center wrote in a Wednesday morning update.
