New tropical disturbance may develop next week. Destination uncertain
Florida and the Caribbean may be in for a storm-free Labor Day Weekend, but forecasters are eyeing a new disturbance in the Atlantic for next week and beyond.
A tropical wave is set to roll off the coast of Africa on Sunday and start spinning its way west across the Atlantic this week, where it has a chance to take a run at storm status over the next week or so.
As of the 2 p.m. update on Friday, the National Hurricane Center gave the tropical disturbance a 30% chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm in the next week and no shot of strengthening in the next two days.
Early versions of long-range models are suggesting the system could have some legs to it and might strengthen into a storm, but it’s too soon to know whether the would-be storm could curve into the open Atlantic — like Hurricane Erin and Tropical Storm Fernand did — or keep heading west and approach the Caribbean or east coast. The models will get better at predicting the storm’s path once the tropical wave touches down in the Atlantic on Sunday.
The next name on the storm list is Gabrielle.
