The National Hurricane Center is tracking two disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean — one of which is expected to evolve into a tropical depression or storm over the Cabo Verde Islands in the coming days.

Read more: Despite a quiet start, forecasters still predict an active hurricane season ahead Here is the latest on the disturbances brewing in the Atlantic, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Disturbance 1: Between west coast of Africa and Cabo Verde Islands

A well-defined low-pressure system has formed about 100 miles east of the Cabo Verde Islands. Signs of thunderstorm development continue, and even a small boost could turn it into a tropical depression or storm before it reaches the islands Sunday night or Monday, the NHC said in a Sunday evening update.

“Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected to continue tonight and Monday across the Cabo Verde Islands...” the hurricane center said. “Even if a tropical depression does not form over the next day or so, environmental conditions appear conducive for later development, and a tropical depression is likely to form by the middle to latter portion of this week...”

There’s a 60% chance of development in the next 48 hours — and a 90% chance over the next seven days, according to the hurricane center.

Disturbance 2: Central Atlantic

In the Central Atlantic, disorganized showers and thunderstorms continue with a “trough of low pressure,” according to the hurricane center.

Dry air nearby is making it harder for this system to grow, but gradual development is possible midweek as it moves north, according to the NHC.

The hurricane center gives this system a 10% chance of forming over the next two days and a 20% chance over the next seven days.
