Florida appears to be in for a wet weekend, regardless of whether a formal tropical depression or storm develops.

Forecasters have upped the chances that a tropical system could form over North Florida in the next week, from 20% earlier in the week to 40% by Wednesday morning.

“Environmental conditions appear only marginally conducive for some slow development, but a tropical or subtropical depression could form in this region over the weekend or early next week while the system moves little,” the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday morning.

A stalled front traveling south could result in an area of low pressure over the northern end of the state, with a potential system forming on either the Gulf or Atlantic side over the weekend or early next week.

As of Wednesday morning, the hurricane center gave the system no chance of developing in the next two days.

Rain from the system could fall on Florida over the weekend and into early next week — and it could be heavy.

“While uncertainty remains, this may result in some threat of flooding for South Florida if persistent rounds of heavy rainfall occur over urban areas. Forecast specifics will likely become more clear as we move forward in time,” the Miami office of the National Weather Service warned.
