Tropical depression forms near Mexico, may become tropical storm before landfall
A tropical depression has formed off Mexico’s gulf coast Saturday afternoon, with forecasters expecting it to strengthen into Tropical Storm Barry.
In its 4 p.m. advisory, the National Hurricane Center announced that Tropical Depression Two had formed in the Bay of Campeche.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for Mexico’s gulf coast from Boca de Catan south to Tecolutla.
The depression is forecast to move west-northwest at about 7 mph, and continue in that direction for the next day or two. The system is set to make landfall along the Mexico coast on Sunday night and move inland.
Some intensification is expected over the next day or so, with the system strengthening into a tropical storm possibly by Sunday.
NOAA has called for another above-average season this year, with 13 to 19 named storms, six to 10 of which could strengthen into hurricanes and three to five of which could become major storms — Category 3 or higher.
