Tropical Storm Sara is no longer expected to reach the Gulf of Mexico next week
Tropical Storm Sara is now expected to dissolve before reaching the Gulf of Mexico, reducing the potential future threat to Florida.
But, the National Hurricane Center said, the storm is expected to bring “life-threatening” flooding and mudslides to Central America over the weekend, potentially up to 30 inches of rain in some spots.
As of the 10 a.m. Friday update, forecasters expected Sara to strike Honduras for the next few days and then hit Belize as a tropical storm, while moving north through the Yucatan Peninsula.
The hurricane center now predicts the storm will dissolve over land and not make it back out over open water in the Gulf of Mexico. However, the remnants of Sara have a chance to spin into some rainstorms in the middle of next week, forecasters said.
“Given the strong wind shear and cooler waters, no tropical redevelopment is expected over the Gulf of Mexico,” they wrote.
