A disturbance churning in the Atlantic Ocean may strengthen into a tropical depression by next week, forecasters said Thursday.

A tropical wave creating showers and thunderstorms is moving briskly over the central Tropical Atlantic, the National Hurricane Center said in its 2 p.m. advisory.

Forecasters say this disturbance may develop gradually as it moves west at 10 to 15 mph, nearing the Lesser Antilles. It’s on track to become a tropical depression early next week.

The hurricane center puts its chances of forming in the next seven days at 40%, up from 20% Wednesday afternoon. It has no chance of formation in the next two days.
