Tropical storm expected to form by Monday. Haiti, Puerto Rico could be affected
A tropical disturbance moving through the Atlantic Ocean has a growing chance of strengthening into a tropical storm early into the week in the Caribbean, forecasters said.
Though the National Hurricane Center said the storm is still less than 900 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, the extended projected path includes Puerto Rico and a small part of the Dominican Republic. A shift to the west puts Haiti in the path.
The system has maximum sustained winds near 30 mph, according to the NHC. It’s moving west-northwest at about 23 mph, leading several Caribbean islands to issue tropical storm watches.
“Some strengthening is forecast, and the system is expected to become a tropical storm by late Monday,” the Sunday 8 p.m. update says.
Formation chance in the next 48 hours: 80%, up from 70% earlier in Sunday and 50% Saturday night.
Formation chance in the next seven days: 90%, the same as it’s been since Saturday night.
