Hurricane warnings issued for Tropical Storm Tammy. What the forecast track shows

Projections that Tropical Storm Tammy will become a hurricane remained on Friday’s 11 a.m. National Hurricane Center advisory as hurricane warnings are issued for several Caribbean islands.

Here’s what else the hurricane center has to say about the storm:

Strength: The storm’s maximum sustained winds are at 75 mph with higher gusts, and hurricane force winds extended about 25 miles from the storm’s center and tropical storm force winds extended out 140 miles. .

“Little change in strength is expected tonight, but gradual strengthening is expected to begin on Friday and continue into this weekend,” the hurricane center said. “Tammy is forecast to be at or near hurricane intensity when it moves near the Leeward Islands Friday night and Saturday.”

Where it is and where it’s going: Tammy is about 200 miles east-southeast of the Leeward Islands and is now moving west-northwest at 7 mph.

“A turn toward the northwest is anticipated by this evening, followed by a north-northwestward and northward turn Saturday night through Sunday night,” the hurricane center said.

Watches or warnings: A hurricane warning was issued for Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, and and Nevis.

A tropical storm warning is also in effect for Dominica, Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, and Nevis, Anguilla and St. Barthelemy, St. Maarten and St. Martin.

Barbados, Martinique, Saba and St. Eustatius, too, are under a tropical storm watch.

“Tropical storm conditions are expected within the tropical storm warning area beginning later today or tonight. Hurricane conditions are expected in the hurricane warning area by late tonight or early Saturday,” the NHC said. “Hurricane conditions are possible in the hurricane watch area in the Leeward Islands on Saturday. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the tropical storm watch area beginning later today.”

Hazards: Up to four inches of rain are expected for eastern Puerto Rico and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands before Saturday night. But the Leeward Islands and northern Windward Islands are forecast to get the heaviest showers, three to six inches and possibly 12 inches. The Leeward Islands could see storm surge of one to three feet above normal tide levels.

Deadly surf and rip current conditions from Tammy’s swells should be seen in the Lesser Antilles on Thursday.

What threat does Tammy pose to Florida or the U.S. East Coast: None forecast so far.
