Tropical Storm Tammy forms near the Caribbean. Storm watches issued for some islands
Tropical Storm Tammy formed Wednesday afternoon near the Caribbean Sea, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Tropical storm watches have been issued for portions of the Lesser Antilles.
The U.S. Coast Guard is cautioning the maritime community to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions as Tammy approaches the area of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Here’s what to know from the hurricane center’s 5 p.m. advisory.
Where is Tropical Storm Tammy? Where is it heading?
Tammy is about 625 miles east of the Windward Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, according to the hurricane center. It is quickly moving west at 23 mph but its forward motion is expected to slow down by Thursday.
“A turn toward the west-northwest is forecast by Thursday night, followed by a turn toward the northwest Friday night or Saturday,” the hurricane center said. “On the forecast track, the center of Tammy will move near or over the Leeward Islands Friday and Saturday.”
Will Tropical Storm Tammy get stronger?
Its maximum sustained winds are expected to increase up to 70 mph in about four days.
Have tropical storm watches or warnings been issued?
Tropical storm watches were issued at 5 p.m. for Barbados, Dominica, Martinique and Guadeloupe.
Will Tropical Storm Tammy impact Florida?
It’s too early to say for certain whether Tammy will have any impact on Florida, but meteorologists expect it to stay away from the Sunshine State.
“It could near hurricane strength as we near the end of the weekend, but the good news is it’s expected to stay away from Florida,” Wink News meteorologist Lauren Kreidler said on X, formerly Twitter.
