Tropical Depression Nicole dousing Florida. Where is it going, what bad weather to expect?
Nicole has about wrapped up its time in Florida as of Thursday night, downgraded to a depression, but it’s still causing heavy rains in the nation’s Southeast.
The system made landfall landfall as a Category 1 hurricane just south of Vero Beach on Florida’s east coast early Thursday. It quickly weakened into a large tropical storm.
Where is Nicole going? How strong is it? And what watches and warnings are in effect?

As of late Thursday night, Nicole’s center was near the Florida/Georgia border.
The tropical storm was about 20 miles north of Tallahassee, according to the National Hurricane Center’s Thursday night advisory. And it’s becoming weaker. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to nearly 35 mph with higher gusts.
Where is Tropical Depression Nicole going?
Nicole is moving northwest quickly at nearly 15 mph and is forecast to move into southwestern Georgia late Thursday night and Friday. It will likely head across the western Carolinas later on Friday.
The hurricane center said Nicole will continue to weaken into a post-tropical cyclone on Friday.
What hazards could Nicole bring to Florida?
The hurricane center said that Nicole will continue to produce heavy rainfall across the Florida Peninsula late Thursday night through Saturday, with flash and urban flooding possible.
Forecasters anticipate 2 to 4 inches of rain, with some areas possibly seeing up to 6 to 8 inches.
Also in the forecast: Dangerous storm surge along portions of the east-central and northeastern coast of Florida, as well as on the Gulf Coast of the Big Bend region.
Storm surge of 1 to 3 feet is forecast from the Flagler/Volusia county line to the Savannah River, including along the St. Johns River. The Anclote River to the Ochlockonee River is likely to see 1 to 3 feet of surge as well.
