Possible levee breach threatens to flood a Myakka neighborhood, Sheriff’s office says

Threats of flooding from a possible levee break have caused sheriff’s deputies to go door to door in a community in Sarasota County to encourage residents to evacuate from their homes, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s office said Saturday morning.

Residents of the Hidden River community near the Myakka River received alerts at 3 a.m. warning them of the potential levee damage and have been encouraged to evacuate the area, the press release said.

According to a tweet from the Manatee County government, residents in Manatee County won’t be impacted by any flooding caused by the damaged levee.

The sheriff’s office said it appears flooding from the levee will impact about 70 residents who live on the east side of the Hidden River community and should not impact other areas of the county, including Venice and North Port.

Sarasota County fire personnel are working with the sheriff’s office to make residents of the neighborhood aware of the potential flood threat.
