Hurricane Ian made landfall on the southwest Florida coastline Wednesday, bringing with it dangerously powerful wind gusts and storm surges of up to 18 feet.

Damage is being reported in cities across the Sunshine State that have been wrought by the catastrophic storm. Here are some of the scenes from Hurricane Ian so far.

In Bradenton, transformers that help provide power to the region have been exploding.

Storm surge has been flooding roads throughout Southwest Florida.

The International Space Station has a direct view of the storm, which stretches 500 miles east to west, twice the width of the Florida peninsula.

Hurricane Hunter Nick Underwood flew into the storm Wednesday and said it was the “worst” flight he’d ever had.

“I have flown storms for the last six years,” Underwood tweeted. This flight to Hurricane #Ian on Kermit (#NOAA42) was the worst I’ve ever been on. I’ve never seen so much lightning in an eye.”

The lightning Underwood reported can be easily seen in satellite imagery, where the flashes of light look like something out of a science fiction natural disaster movie.

Reports have been surfacing of homes obliterated by the storm and others are almost completely submerged.

Here’s a look at some of the flash flooding and devastation across Florida since Ian’s landfall:

Scenes from Fort Myers

Scenes from Naples

A group of Naples firefighters moved to salvage life-saving equipment in chest-deep water after their truck was inundated from Ian’s storm surge.

The Naples Fire-Rescue Department posted a video of the event on Facebook. It was also provided to the Miami Herald.

Storm surge consumed parts of the city as Ian came ashore Wednesday afternoon.

Scenes from Punta Gorda

World-renowned storm chaser Josh Morgerman (known as iCyclone) was inside the idea of Ian in Punta Gorda.
