What hurricane supplies can you buy tax-free? Pet food is new on the list this year
Getting ready for hurricane season isn’t cheap.
To help, the state is once again giving Floridians a tax break on supplies.
What’s covered? Merchandise includes batteries, generators and power banks. And this year pet evacuation supplies — food, cat litter and waste-disposal bags — are included.
The 2022 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday runs May 28 through June 10 and covers both brick-and-mortar and online shopping.
Every year, Floridians are urged to get ready for the season — which begins June 1. This year, forecasters are predicting an active season with 14 to 21 named storms.
So now is a good time to shop and get ready. No state sales tax will be added to the following items:
What’s included in the tax break on hurricane supplies?
The below items are tax-free (the price limits to get the break are per item, like individual cans of pet food).
▪ $2 or less: Cans or pouches of wet pet food
▪ $15 or less: Manual can openers; collapsible or travel-sized food or water bowls for pets; cat litter pans; pet waste disposal bags; and hamster or rabbit substrate
▪ $20 or less: Reusable ice packs; leashes, collars and muzzles for pets; and pet pads
▪ $30 or less: Bags of dry pet food weighing 15 or fewer pounds
▪ $40 or less: Portable self-powered light sources, including flashlights and lanterns, and pet beds
▪ $50 or less: Portable self-powered radios, two-way radios or weather-band radios; gas or diesel fuel tanks; and batteries, including AA-cell, AAA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, 6-volt and 9-volt
▪ $60 or less: Non-electric food storage coolers and portable power banks
▪ $70 or less: Smoke detectors or smoke alarms; fire extinguishers; and carbon monoxide detectors
▪ $100 or less: Tarpaulins or other flexible waterproof sheeting; ground anchor systems; and portable pet kennels
▪ $1,000 or less: Portable generators
