How hot was it in South Florida? Hot enough to break a record

No, it’s not summer yet, but it might as well be.

It’s hot. Really hot. And now we have a record to prove it.

On Monday, temperatures reached 97 degrees at Miami International Airport, breaking the record of 96 degrees in 2015, according to the National Weather Service.

Barry Baxter, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Monday that the dry weather and wind directions from the south-southwest have combined to create intense heat.

“It’s been an extremely hot April for us,” Baxter said, adding that we are about 7 degrees warmer than usual on average.

He said with little rain, the ground is dry “so it allows it to heat up quicker.”

Tuesday could also break a record. The high for Tuesday is projected to be 90 degrees, and the record high was 90 degrees set in 1988.

Miami has already broken a record. On Saturday, the temperature was 93. The previous record was 90, set in 2015.

Baxter said South Florida is moving toward the rainy season — which starts May 15 — so it’s hard to say if the extreme heat is here to stay. He said by the end of the week it could cool down a little.

“We may get a little relief, but it will probably get hot again quickly,” he said.
