Heat advisory issued as Norway and England fans swarm Miami for World Cup match
High-risk heat continues to grip South Florida.
For the fifth consecutive day, the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Saturday’s advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m., with heat-index values expected to reach as high as 108 degrees across the region.
These conditions come as about 70,000 fans are expected to pack Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens for the FIFA World Cup quarterfinal match between Norway and England at 5 p.m.
A heat advisory is issued by the NWS Miami if the heat index is 105 degrees for at least a couple of hours. The heat index measures how hot it actually feels by combining the air temperature with relative humidity, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service has also issued a major heat-risk alert — the third-highest of four heat-risk levels.
“Major risk of heat-related illnesses for much of the population, especially those without effective cooling or adequate hydration,” the National Weather Service in Miami said in its advisory. Officials added that air conditioning is necessary, warning that fans and open windows alone will not provide enough relief from the oppressive heat.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, avoid prolonged sun exposure and check on relatives, neighbors and other vulnerable individuals.
For those who must work outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to reduce the risk of heat-related illness. Anyone showing signs of heat illness should be moved immediately to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke is a medical emergency — call 911 right away.
