A strong winter storm is coming for our neighbors, Georgia and North Carolina, but South Florida will be spared from the frigid fallout this weekend aside from delays at the airports. In fact, this weekend is perfect for a dip in your Miami or Fort Lauderdale pool, with summer-like temperatures moving into the region.

“We’ll have near record high temperatures on Sunday,” said CBS News Miami meteorologist Scott Withers. “Enjoy the beach.”

MORE: Expect delays at Miami airport through weekend from winter storm

The winter storm beginning Friday outside of Florida, and kept away from here by a boundary, has meteorologists from the Weather Channel using terms “historic” and “catastrophic.” The system will carry heavy snow over 34 states through Monday from the Plains to the Midwest and Northeast.

But Florida, basking in warmth this weekend with highs that shoot into the 80s, can look to the cold weather in other states as a taste of what’s to come. On Monday night, parts of South Florida could be feeling the 40s and 50s again.

“wEe’ll have near record high temperatures on Sunday,” said CBS News Miami Scott Withers. “Enjoy the beach.

Here is what to expect over the next few days:

Miami’s weekend weather forecast

Until Miami gets its date with the winter big chill, we have a warm weekend ahead, with highs in the low- to mid-80s on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday during the day. Expect lows around 70 in the early morning hours on those days, with about a 20% chance of rain.

A nippy Monday night drop to 54 in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area continues evenings with lows in the mid- and upper-50s or around 60 through Thursday.

The daytime high will only reach 68 on Tuesday, with a breezy north wind reaching 28 mph gusts, according to Miami’s weather service.

Expect 71 as the warmest Wednesday gets for the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area and a dip again Thursday to a high of 69.

The following weekend, beginning Friday, Jan. 30, dips lows to 49 with “feels-like” temperatures a few degrees chillier, and the 50s a week from now on that Saturday and Sunday, according to Weather Underground. Daytime highs will only climb into the mid- and upper-60s.
