When will all this rain end? What South Florida can expect on weekend and beyond

Red tail lights, bumper to bumper and steady rains reducing vision and puddling roads, like this stretch of Miller Road in the Coral Gables area on Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, were familiar sites on a day that foretells the coming weather week.

The widespread storms that served up floods and gridlock to Friday afternoon commuters from the Keys to Coral Gables will stick around through the weekend.

The chance of rain in the Miami area on Saturday is 80%, according to the National Weather Service. A “coast flood statement” continues for the Upper Keys through Saturday afternoon.

The weather service in Miami expects “widespread showers and storms ... with heavy rainfall and frequent cloud to ground lightning as main storm hazards.”

“Nuisance rain,” CBS Miami meteorologist Scott Withers called it Friday afternoon as South Florida streets flooded from the deluge.

The rain pounded so hard Friday afternoon that Aventura police closed a portion of Biscayne Boulevard from 191st Street to 29th Avenue, near Aventura Mall, due to road flooding. The area reopened around 5 p.m.

But Friday night’s respite from the rains doesn’t mean South Florida is getting a weather glow-up any time over the next week.

The University of Miami patio adjacent to the UC Pool seemed to have as much rain pooling as the diving well contained just before 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2025. That’s an exaggeration, but students did see a walloping downpour.

Weekend and beyond forecast

Rain chances remain high Saturday and Sunday in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas. And the Keys are not looking like an outdoor paradise, except for ducks, given its even odds for afternoon deluges, according to the weather service. The sogginess is expected from Saturday through much of the next workweek.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Saturday runs an 80% chance of rain and thunderstorms in Miami-Dade and Broward at any time in the day but rising around 2 p.m., with another half an inch forecast. And some areas could see more during thunderstorms, the Miami weather service said. Evenings bring a breather, dropping to 50%.
  • Sunday between 2 and 5 p.m. will see a 70% rain chance in Miami areas and higher around Fort Lauderdale, at 80%.
  • Monday through Thursday isn’t looking more promising, with rain chances still elevated around 70% in South Florida, similar to Friday’s pattern when storms started popping around 1 or 2 in the afternoon.
