Rain expected through the night; airport delays, ramps flood on MacArthur Causeway

Heavy rains are expected through Monday evening as the afternoon’s deluge led to flash flood warnings, advisories to avoid the MacArthur Causeway due to flooding and headaches at the airports, authorities said.

The heaviest rain will occur late this afternoon and into the evening, said the National Weather Service in Miami. Up to 3 inches of rain is possible, forecasters said, with the heaviest rain happening south of I-75.

As the afternoon rush hour approached, the Florida Department of Transportation said drivers should avoid the MacArthur Causeway connecting Miami Beach to Miami due to flooding on the ramps.

The news wasn’t much better for those at Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports.

The ground stops for arriving flights to the Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports lasted less than an hour, from 4:30 to 5:20 p.m. But flight days were expected to continue into Monday night.

MIA had an average delay of arriving flights of 4 hours and 11 minutes on Monday, according to the FAA. Departures had average delays of 15 minutes. At the Fort Lauderdale airport, the average delay for arrivals was about an hour as of 5 p.m. Monday, the FAA said.

Ealier Monday, the National Weather Service in Miami placed several areas across the region under a flash flooding warning until 4:45 p.m. Thunderstorms produced heavy rain across Miami-Dade, with 2 to 3 inches of rain having fallen.

Flash flooding, per the NWS, will occur in creeks, highways, streets and areas with poor drainage.

The NWS also issued an alert for communities farther south, from Doral down to Cutler Bay, for high winds up to 50 mph, heavy rain and hail.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the rainy weather caused flooding along Biscayne Boulevard between Northeast 11th and 13th streets, and on Northeast 13th Street from North Bayshore Drive to Northeast First Avenue.
