New disturbance near Africa has high development chances, hurricane forecasters say
The National Hurricane Center is watching a new disturbance near Africa that could develop into a tropical depression by the middle of the week.
Post tropical cyclone Philippe’s long and winding journey along the Atlantic is still bringing moisture, winds and flash flood warnings to portions of the northeastern United States and may affect the coast of Atlantic Canada or eastern New England over the weekend, but advisories ended after its downgrade Friday night.
Eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean disturbance
A low-latitude tropical wave near the west coast of Africa was producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms, and environmental conditions are conducive for gradual development, the hurricane center said in its 8 p.m. Saturday advisory.
Forecasters say a tropical depression is likely to form by the middle of next week while it moves westward to west-northwestward across the eastern tropical Atlantic.
Formation chance through 48 hours: 30%
Formation chance through seven days: 70%
