Weather alert: Flight delays at Miami airport as strong storms flood South Florida

Blinding rain, dark clouds and street flooding are menacing South Florida Thursday evening, triggering flight delays at Miami International Airport.

The National Weather Service issued four flood advisories Thursday afternoon. Forecasters urged people to take shelter from the storms.

The area still under an advisory includes the Miami airport. FlightAware is flagging departure delays up to an average of an hour and 25 minutes. All inbound flights are also being held at their point of origin until 6 p.m.

The flood advisory is in effect until 5:45 p.m. It covers Miami, Hialeah, Opa-locka, Miami Springs, Medley, Miami International Airport, West Little River and nearby neighborhoods.

The Miami Springs and Hialeah areas have seen between four to six inches of rain so far, forecasters say. The advisory area is expected see up to another inch of rain.

The heavy downpour is causing continued flooding.
