Weather Alert: Flash flooding warning issued for Broward due to thunderstorms
Forecasters are alerting certain Broward residents to seek high ground as flash flooding will be plaguing some cities until late in the night.
Around 7:30 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the Broward cities and neighborhoods of Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, Plantation, Sunrise, Tamarac, Wilton Manors, Golden Heights and other surrounding areas.
The warning is in effect until 9 p.m.
The flash flooding is being caused by thunderstorms overhead that are bringing heavy rains, Doppler radar showed. Between 2 and 5 inches of rain have already fallen, with an expected 1 to 3 inches coming in the next hour.
Small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and low-lying areas with poor drainage could all see flooding.
Apart from seeking high ground, forecasters are also reminding resident to turn around when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths happen in cars, the NWS said.
