Have you made plans for an outdoor Mother’s Day brunch in Miami?

Better have a backup plan.

That sunny and hot weather we’ve seen with temperatures in the upper-80s up to 90 that we’ve been enjoying (or sweltering through) in South Florida this week, and will continue to feel into Friday, is about to get nasty Saturday and Mother’s Day Sunday.

Blame it on a complex approaching system, says Will Redman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Miami.

“We have a blocking ridge pattern in the north. And then we’re getting an upper-level load underneath that that’s going to be ... over the peninsula in the next couple of days here,” he said.

What this means for your outdoor soiree?

Miami-Dade and Broward forecast

Expect an increase in moisture and chances for showers and storms pretty much all weekend — and maybe into the next week, Redman said.

That system is not going to move especially fast once it settles atop South Florida.

“So this means increasing moisture, increasing energy aloft, so it’s going to pretty much just result in consistent rain and thunderstorm chances over the weekend,” Redman said.

Temperatures will range from lows in the mid-70s to highs in the mid-80s.

Thursday: Just a slight chance of rain or storms, 20%.

Friday: Low to moderate chances of wet weather, mostly in the afternoon, at 40%.

Saturday and Sunday: The main risk is lightning-laden thunderstorms, with chances at 60%. But these odds could go higher on Sunday, Redman said. Wind gusts could top 20 mph in the stronger storms. Hail is not a threat given atmospheric temperatures should be too warm to foster the development of hail of the kind some saw in the April storms in Miami-Dade and Broward, and elsewhere in Florida.

Monday: Rain chances still 50%.

Tuesday: Rain chance at 40%.

The Florida Keys

Isolated thunderstorms will be possible Thursday night through Monday at 40%. Small craft advisories are likely, according to the weather service in Key West.

Rip current risk

The threat of rip currents along east coast beaches remains elevated through the weekend as easterly wind flow persists, the weather service said. Hazardous marine conditions for small craft may be possible over Atlantic waters late in the week, Friday into the weekend as winds and seas rise.
